The package reached Down House on the eighteenth of June, 1858. It had traveled by steamer from the far side of the world — posted from Ternate, a clove-and-nutmeg speck in the Moluccas that served as the base and mailing address of a struggling English specimen collector named Alfred Russel Wallace. He had thought the thing through and written it out on a neighbouring island during the shaking lulls of a malarial fever. Wallace had addressed it to Charles Darwin, a man he had met only briefly and admired from a distance, with a request that Darwin pass it on to the geologist Charles Lyell if he thought it any good.
Darwin read it and understood at once what it meant.
Twenty years of silence
Darwin had been sitting on one of the most dangerous ideas in nineteenth-century biology for two decades. He sketched it in pencil in 1842 — thirty-five pages, a “very brief abstract,” as he put it — expanded it into an essay in 1844 that ran past two hundred pages in fair copy, and then did almost nothing with it. Even admitting the belief on paper cost him. Writing to his friend the botanist Joseph Hooker in January 1844, months before the essay itself existed, he confessed that he was “almost convinced” that species are not immutable — and broke off mid-sentence to add that saying so was “like confessing a murder.” It was another three years before he let Hooker actually read the finished essay. He left instructions for his wife, Emma, to have it edited and published if he died.
The delay was partly temperament and partly fear. Darwin was a cautious, sickly, methodical man who wanted his case airtight before he made it, and he knew exactly how the case would be received. To argue that living things had not been created in their present forms, but had been shaped over vast time by the simple, undirected pressure of survival, was to argue against the Church, against natural theology, against the settled order of educated Victorian belief.
So he gathered data instead. He bred pigeons, dissected barnacles for eight years, corresponded with breeders and naturalists across the Empire, and built his evidence into a monument that he kept meaning to finish and never did. By 1858 he had written perhaps a quarter of a million words toward a vast book provisionally titled Natural Selection. He was in no hurry. He assumed he had time.
The letter from Ternate
What arrived from Wallace was a short essay titled “On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type.” It was a clean, confident statement of natural selection — the idea that more individuals are born than can survive, that they vary, that the variations best suited to conditions are the ones that persist, and that this winnowing, repeated over enough generations, is enough to produce new species. Wallace had arrived at it independently, half a world away, lying in a hut and waiting for the fever to break. He never used the phrase “natural selection” — he wrote instead of a “struggle for existence,” and he framed the winnowing as acting on whole varieties rather than on the small differences between individuals. The engine was recognizably Darwin’s own.
Darwin forwarded the essay to Lyell the same day, with a covering note that reads like a man watching his life’s work dissolve. “If Wallace had my MS. sketch written out in 1842,” he wrote, “he could not have made a better short abstract!” And then: “So all my originality, whatever it may amount to, will be smashed.”
He was caught in a trap of his own making. To rush his own theory into print now, after Wallace’s essay had landed on his desk, would look like theft. To stay silent and let Wallace publish first would mean surrendering twenty years of priority. A week later he wrote to Lyell again, miserable: “I would far rather burn my whole book than that he or any man should think that I had behaved in a paltry spirit.”
A house in mourning
While Darwin agonized over priority, his household was coming apart. His youngest child, Charles Waring Darwin — born when Emma was forty-eight, and almost certainly affected by what would later be recognized as Down syndrome — fell ill with scarlet fever. The disease was tearing through the village.
On the twenty-eighth of June, ten days after Wallace’s essay arrived, the baby died. Darwin wrote four words in his journal: “Poor dear Baby died.”
He left the whole matter of Wallace in the hands of Lyell and Hooker. He could not think about it. “I am quite prostrated,” he wrote to Hooker the next day, “& can do nothing.”
The delicate arrangement
Lyell and Hooker engineered a compromise that has been argued over ever since. They proposed presenting the work of both men together, at the Linnean Society of London, in a single reading. Wallace’s essay would be paired with evidence that Darwin had reached the same conclusion years earlier: an extract from Darwin’s unpublished 1844 essay and an abstract of a letter Darwin had written in 1857 to the American botanist Asa Gray, laying out the theory. The two would appear as co-discoverers, with Darwin’s priority quietly established by the dates.
Wallace knew nothing of this. He had not been asked and could not have been reached in time. Nor did Darwin quite know what was being read on his behalf. He had sent Hooker the 1844 essay, but only, as he put it, “solely that you may see by your own handwriting that you did read it” — proof of the date, not copy for a public reading. Hooker extracted from it anyway, and Darwin seems not to have learned of it until about two weeks after the meeting. He was burying his son, and he let it proceed.
On the first of July, 1858, the papers were read aloud to the Linnean Society. Neither author was present. Darwin was at Down House in mourning; Wallace was on the coast of New Guinea, where he had gone collecting after posting the essay, unaware that the most important moment of his scientific life was happening in a London meeting room. The society’s secretary, John Joseph Bennett, delivered the texts to about thirty fellows.
Nothing happened. There was no uproar, no debate, scarcely any discussion at all. The idea that would tear apart the Victorian understanding of life landed in the room and produced silence. The following year, in his annual report, the society’s president, the zoologist Thomas Bell, summed up 1858 as a year that “has not, indeed, been marked by any of those striking discoveries which at once revolutionise” their science.
What it forced
The joint reading did what nothing else had: it broke Darwin’s paralysis. Lyell and Hooker had given him his priority; now he had to defend it. He gave up on the enormous book as the thing he would publish — it would never appear as he had planned it — and starting that July, on holiday at Sandown on the Isle of Wight, spent the next year writing what he called an “abstract” of it. On the Origin of Species went on sale on the twenty-fourth of November, 1859. Two days earlier, at Murray’s autumn trade sale, the booksellers had subscribed for around 1,500 copies — more than the print run of 1,250 could supply. Murray’s letter asking Darwin to start revising for a new edition reached him on publication day itself.
Wallace, when word of the arrangement finally reached him, was not bitter. He understood that Darwin had the data, the standing, and the decades of work that he himself lacked, and he seems to have felt honored to be placed beside him at all. He spent the rest of his long life as evolution’s most generous champion. In 1889 he published his own book on the subject and gave it a one-word title that settled the question of credit for good. He called it Darwinism.
