A Customer Wanted an Inner Tube. Wilbur Wright Kept Twisting the Empty Box.

Stand a bicycle up and let go and it falls over. It only stays upright because a rider is correcting it constantly, leaning and steering by feel. Nearly everyone chasing flight in the 1890s was after the opposite — a machine so inherently stable it would fly itself, the way a boat sits level in the water.

Wilbur and Orville Wright had spent the decade in a Dayton storefront selling, fixing, and building bicycles, watching customers wobble and then master a machine that never stopped needing correction. Wilbur drew the opposite conclusion from everyone else. A flying machine did not need to be stable. It needed a pilot who could balance it.

That left the harder question of how. Birds banked by twisting the trailing edges of their wings, and nobody had found a way to do that to a rigid wing without a nest of hinges that would shake apart.

In the summer of 1899 a customer came in for an inner tube. While he talked, Wilbur turned the long cardboard box it came in, pressing diagonal corners at each end. The box twisted along its length, one end tilting up, the other down — and stayed rigid.
