It stood fifty feet tall and ninety feet across on the Boston waterfront, a steel drum the size of a small building, and almost everything that mattered about it can be read off the tank alone. It was raised in 1915 to hold molasses on Commercial Street — shipped up from the Caribbean, warmed and stored to be distilled into industrial alcohol, the stuff of munitions and, soon, of liquor before Prohibition closed the door. At full load it held about 2.3 million gallons, roughly thirteen thousand tons. From the day it went up, it leaked.
The tank that bled
Molasses seeped from the seams in thin brown threads. Children from the North End brought pails and cans and scraped the runoff off the metal; some neighbors filled jars for their own kitchens. The leaking was not a secret. The tank announced its own weakness daily, in stains down its sides, and the company that owned it — United States Industrial Alcohol — heard the announcement and decided how to answer.
It did not fix the seams. It had the tank painted a rusty brown, so the dark molasses bleeding down the steel would not show.
The reason the tank bled went back to how it was raised. It had been built under the supervision of Arthur Jell, the company’s treasurer, a man with no training in architecture or engineering and no apparent qualification for the job beyond watching the budget. He had not read the structural plans in any meaningful way. When the tank was finished, the standard safety check — filling it with water to test the seams under load before trusting it with cargo — was skipped. Jell ordered it filled with about six inches of water, enough to wet the bottom and nothing more, and pronounced it sound. Then it was filled with molasses, and it began to leak, and it groaned every time it was topped up, and it was painted brown instead of repaired.
The tank that burst
On January 15, 1919, a little after half past noon, the tank tore itself apart.
The day before, a fresh shipment had been pumped in, warmed to keep it flowing, raising both the load and the internal pressure. The temperature outside had climbed overnight from near zero to the low forties, unusually mild for January. At about 12:30 p.m., the steel plates gave way. Witnesses said the rivets popped loose with a sound like machine-gun fire. The whole side peeled open and the contents came out at once.
What followed did not behave like spilled syrup. The wave that surged into the streets stood as high as twenty-five feet at its front and moved at an estimated thirty-five miles an hour — faster than a man can run, faster than the horses harnessed to the wagons in the yard. It carried a pressure wave ahead of it strong enough to lift a truck and throw it into the harbor, to shove buildings off their foundations, and to snap the steel girders of the elevated railway on Atlantic Avenue, buckling the track and nearly dropping a train.
Twenty-one people died. Around a hundred and fifty were injured.
Most of the dead were laborers, teamsters, and dockworkers caught in the open at the paving yard and the freight sheds nearby, men who had no warning and nowhere to go. Among them were Maria Di Stasio and Pasquale Iantosca, both ten years old, out in the mild afternoon. A firefighter named George Layhe was killed when the wave tore into the Engine 31 firehouse next door; the building partly collapsed around him, and rescuers found him nearly four hours later pinned beneath fallen timbers, a piano, and a pool table.
Molasses is heavy, and as it cooled in the January air it thickened. People caught at the edge of the wave found themselves waist-deep in something that set around them like wet cement. Rescuers waded in and could not keep their footing; horses mired in it were shot where they stood because they could not be pulled free. The cleanup took weeks. Salt water from fireboats was the only thing that cut the residue, and for months afterward the harbor ran brown and the whole district smelled of sugar gone sour.
The tank on trial
What had burst became the thing to be explained, and United States Industrial Alcohol had an explanation ready that pointed anywhere but at its own steel. It was 1919, the country was in the grip of a Red Scare, and Boston had seen genuine anarchist violence — there had even been a threat, the year before, to blow up that very tank. So the company’s lawyers argued that the disaster was sabotage: someone had set off a bomb inside the tank, and no fault of construction was to blame.
More than a hundred lawsuits followed, consolidated into one of the longest civil proceedings Massachusetts had ever seen. A court-appointed auditor, Hugh W. Ogden, heard testimony for years — thousands of witnesses, tens of thousands of pages — weighing the bomb against the rivets.
In April 1925, six years after the flood, Ogden ruled. There had been no bomb. The tank had failed because it was too weak to hold what was poured into it. Its steel walls were too thin — by later analysis, roughly half the thickness a tank that size required. The metal was low in manganese, which left it brittle in the cold. The plates carried too few rivets to hold the load, and the cracks that brought it down had begun at the rivet holes, the weakest points, exactly where an overstressed and undertested vessel would split. The tank had been telling the truth in brown stains for four years; the court simply read it.
The company paid out around $628,000 — close to ten million in today’s money — including roughly seven thousand dollars to the family of each person killed. The findings carried past the courtroom. The molasses flood became a case study in why large structures need real engineers, real calculations, and real inspection, and it is often cited among the failures that pushed American cities toward requiring certified engineers to sign off on major works — so that the next tank would not be built by a treasurer, tested with six inches of water, and painted to hide what it could not hold.
