Radium is chemically a near-twin of calcium, and a body cannot tell the two apart. Swallow it, and the skeleton files it away in the bones as if it were the mineral that builds them. There it stays, lodged in the marrow, firing alpha particles into the cells around it — year after year, killing what makes blood and eating holes in the skeleton from the inside. Everything that happened to the women who painted watch dials happened because of what their bones had quietly kept.
In a factory in Orange, New Jersey, young women sat at long tables painting numbers onto the faces of watches with a paint that glowed. The work was delicate. A clock dial is small, the figures smaller, and the brush had to come to a fine point to lay a clean line. The women were taught a quick way to keep that point: draw the bristles between the lips, give a twist, and the brush tipped itself. Lip, dip, paint. They did it hundreds of times a day.
The paint was called Undark. It was radium suspended in zinc sulfide and gum arabic, and it had made the United States Radium Corporation prosperous. Radium was, in 1917, a miracle — costly, glamorous, sold in tonics and face creams and advertised as a fountain of energy. The women who painted with it were the envy of their towns. They glowed faintly when they walked home in the dark, dust caught in their hair and on their clothes, and some of them painted their nails and teeth with it for a night out.
They were paid by the dial, a penny and a half each, and a fast painter could do two hundred and fifty in a shift. When one of them asked whether the paint was safe to put in her mouth, she was told it was harmless. With every stroke the skeleton was taking it in.
What the jaw held
Amelia Maggia started at the plant in 1917, at nineteen. By 1922 a tooth had gone bad. The dentist pulled it; the socket would not heal. Another tooth loosened and came out, and the gap filled with an ulcer that bled and would not close. The decay spread through her mouth and into the bone, and at one point a doctor reached into her jaw and lifted the whole thing out — it had crumbled to the point that it came away in his fingers. She died that September, at twenty-five, when the rot reached an artery and she hemorrhaged.
The cause of death on her certificate was given as a complication of syphilis. The misdiagnosis was convenient. As more dial painters fell ill — anemic, exhausted, their teeth dropping out, their leg bones breaking under their own weight — the rumor that they had a venereal disease did the work of explaining the deaths while smearing the dead.
It was a story to lay over the bones. The bones told a different one.
What the exams concealed
The company knew. In 1924 it hired Cecil Drinker, a physiologist from the Harvard School of Public Health, to study conditions at the plant. Drinker and his wife Katherine found a workforce in trouble — abnormal blood counts, women visibly sick — and wrote it plainly. The corporation took the report, altered it so that it concluded every girl was in perfect condition, and submitted that version to the New Jersey Department of Labor. The fraud held until Alice Hamilton, a Harvard colleague, learned of the doctored copy and pushed the Drinkers to publish their real findings.
The women who came in for examinations were given a similar treatment. The company sent specialists who looked them over and pronounced them healthy. One of these, Frederick Flynn, presented himself as a doctor and assured Grace Fryer she was fine; he was not a physician at all, but a toxicologist on the company’s side. The exams existed to produce reassurance, not diagnosis.
The reassurance changed nothing inside the bone. Grace Fryer had started at U.S. Radium in 1917 and left in 1920. Within two years her teeth began to go and her jaw to ache, and a doctor found her bone decaying without being able to name the cause. It took until 1925 for a physician to connect her ruin to the paint. Then it took her two more years to find a lawyer willing to sue.
What the law could not see
She filed in May 1927. Four others joined her: Edna Hussman, Katherine Schaub, and the sisters Quinta McDonald and Albina Larice — sisters of Amelia Maggia, the woman whose jaw had come away in the doctor’s hand. The newspapers called them the case of the five women doomed to die, and the phrase was not theatrical. When the suit reached court in January 1928, two of the plaintiffs were bedridden, and none of the five could raise an arm high enough to take the oath.
Their case was nearly impossible. New Jersey’s statute of limitations gave a worker two years from the injury to sue, and the women had been poisoned years before they understood what was killing them. The fact that radium worked slowly, invisibly — settling into the skeleton and waiting — was itself a legal shield for the company.
What the bones proved
What broke the silence was a man, not a woman. Sabin von Sochocky had invented the glowing paint and run the laboratory. By 1928 the radium had taken his fingers and his teeth, and he was dying of the same aplastic anemia as the painters. Before he died that November he was, in effect, a witness for the other side — a victim with credentials, confirming from the inside that the work killed.
The harder proof came up out of the ground. When investigators exhumed Amelia Maggia’s body in 1927, five years dead, the radium her skeleton had stored was still firing: her bones were radioactive enough to fog photographic film laid against them in the dark. The marrow that had killed her had outlasted her, and it left a picture of itself on the plate.
On the eve of trial in June 1928, U.S. Radium settled rather than let the case reach a verdict. Each woman received $10,000, a $600 annuity for as long as she lived, and her medical and legal costs. It was money for women who were running out of time to spend it. Grace Fryer died in 1933, at thirty-four, of a sarcoma in her shoulder.
What Ottawa repeated
The same poison was sitting in skeletons in Illinois. The Radium Dial Company ran a plant in Ottawa with the same paint and the same lip-pointing, and when its workers began to die the company answered as U.S. Radium had — with reassuring exams it knew to be hollow, and with the results of its own quiet testing kept from the women it had tested. Catherine Donohue, a dial painter there, sued in the 1930s with the lawyer Leonard Grossman, who took the case without pay. By then she was too sick to travel; her hearings were held in her bedroom, and she weighed seventy-one pounds. She won, and she won again on appeal, and in October 1939 the U.S. Supreme Court let the ruling stand. She had died in July 1938, more than a year before the final decision came down.
What the skeletons measured
The dial painters did not invent the idea that a worker could sue an employer for a disease the job had given her, but they made it real in a way the law could not ignore. Their cases helped force occupational disease into the workers’ compensation systems that had mostly excluded it, and the slow poisonings they suffered became a reason to measure what a human body could safely absorb. In 1941 the federal government set the first tolerance level for radium in the body.
The dust the women had painted on their fingernails became, by way of their skeletons, the baseline for radiation safety. The radium that the bones had stored — the thing that killed them — was measured for decades afterward on the surviving painters, whose skeletons still carried the count.
