A Presto disc recorder cut grooves into lacquer the moment the fire started, which is the only reason anyone remembers the voice. Herbert Morrison had come to Lakehurst, New Jersey, on the evening of May 6, 1937, to record a routine landing. He worked for WLS in Chicago, and the recording was meant for a program days later — proof that you could cover an airship arrival without stringing telephone wire across a field. He was describing the ship’s slow descent in the practiced, unhurried tone of a man narrating something that happens every week.
Then the back of the ship lit up.
“It burst into flames,” Morrison says on the disc, and his voice climbs and cracks. “It’s burning, bursting into flames, and is falling on the mooring mast.” A few seconds later: “Oh, the humanity, and all the passengers screaming around here.” He says he cannot breathe, that he has to step inside, that he cannot talk to people whose friends are out there. When the recording aired the next day, it became the first time NBC ever broadcast a transcription rather than a live feed — the network had a standing rule against recordings, and broke it for this.
What the disc captured was a man certain he was listening to a hundred people die. What was happening in front of him was something else. From the moment the fire appeared, two stories ran side by side at Lakehurst — the catastrophe as it was being recorded, and the catastrophe as it actually unfolded — and they did not match.
The ship in the picture
The Hindenburg was 804 feet long, more than three times the length of a Boeing 747, the largest object ever to fly. Inside were two passenger decks with a dining room, a writing room, a lounge that for its first season held a lightweight grand piano built of aluminum and covered in pigskin, and a smoking room sealed behind an airlock and kept at higher pressure so no stray hydrogen could leak in and ignite. It crossed the Atlantic in two and a half days, in a quiet its passengers described as eerie. It was, by every measure people used at the time, the future of long-distance travel.
Newsreel cameras had been rolling for the routine arrival, the same as Morrison’s recorder. The ship was floating about three hundred feet above the field, lines dropped, when flame appeared near the tail. From the first visible fire to the moment the bow slammed into the ground, accounts give the duration as thirty-two, thirty-four, or thirty-seven seconds. The cameras caught the entire hull dissolving into flame in under a minute.
That footage is the version the world kept. A reasonable person who watched it could only conclude that to board an airship was to step into a bomb.
The fire went up, and the people went down
Hydrogen is the lightest element there is. Seven million cubic feet of it filled the ship, and when it ignited, the fire rose fast, and it rose away from anything beneath it — a column of flame climbing off the top of the hull while the hull itself sank under it. The blaze that made the Hindenburg one of the defining images of the twentieth century was, for many people standing under it, survivable, because the worst of the heat was going straight up while the gondola was still settling toward the ground.
The ship was low. As the tail dropped and the bow tilted upward, passengers and crew kicked out windows and jumped. A fourteen-year-old cabin boy named Werner Franz was knocked down by a burst of water from a ruptured ballast tank, soaked head to foot at the exact moment he needed to be, and walked away. The acrobat Joseph Späh, a passenger, smashed a window with his movie camera, hung from the ledge as the hull came down, and dropped the last twenty feet. Ground crew who had come to catch mooring ropes ran instead toward the wreck and dragged people out of it.
Of the 97 people aboard, 62 survived. Thirty-five of those on the ship died — thirteen passengers and twenty-two crew — along with one man on the ground, a line handler named Allen Hagaman. The most famous catastrophe of its age killed a minority of the people it touched.
Morrison, watching the whole hull turn to fire in half a minute, assumed no one could possibly be alive in there. Most of them were. The recording and the fact diverged in the same thirty-four seconds.
Why it was hydrogen at all
The picture carried a second, quieter implication: that a Nazi airship had been filled with explosive gas, and got what such hubris deserved. The Hindenburg should have been filled with helium. Helium does not burn. Its designer, Hugo Eckener — an old-school airship man and a vocal opponent of the Nazi regime — wanted helium, and the ship was engineered with the heavier gas in mind.
The problem was supply. In the 1930s the United States held very nearly the entire world’s accessible helium, drawn from a few natural-gas fields in the American Southwest, and a 1925 law forbade exporting it. That ban came eight years before Hitler took power. It was not aimed at Nazi Germany, or at airships, or at anyone in particular; it was a blunt strategic hoard of a rare gas the U.S. Navy wanted for its own dirigibles. Germany simply could not buy what no one was allowed to sell. So the world’s flagship airship flew on hydrogen — cheap, abundant, and flammable — with elaborate precautions built around the assumption that the gas would never catch.
The closest the story ever came to the popular version came after the disaster. American sympathy briefly ran toward letting Germany have helium for its next ship, and Eckener came to Washington to ask. The law was even softened to permit sales for non-military use. Then, in March 1938, Germany annexed Austria. Interior Secretary Harold Ickes, who controlled the final signature, refused to believe the gas would stay civilian and killed the deal. Germany’s last great airship, the Graf Zeppelin II, never carried a paying passenger; it flew on hydrogen and was scrapped for its aluminum to build warplanes.
The picture won
No passenger airship of the Hindenburg’s kind ever flew again. The technology had real defenders and an arguable safety record — far more people had already died in the rigid airships of the 1920s and early 1930s, in storms and structural failures, than burned at Lakehurst. What ended the airship was not the death toll. It was the film.
The footage ran in theaters and lived on for decades, paired later with Morrison’s breaking voice, though the two were recorded separately. Together they fixed a single image in the public mind: a hundred people stepping into a flying bomb. The fact that most of the people in the picture had walked out of it never made the picture.
The age of the passenger airship did not end because the machine failed most of the people aboard. It ended because everyone watching was certain it had.
