How a Bankrupt Danish Carpenter and His Son Spent Twenty-Six Years Inventing the LEGO Brick

Turn one over and the secret is right there, where no child ever looks. On top, eight studs in two rows of four. Underneath, three hollow tubes running the length of the block. The studs of one brick slide down between the tubes of the next, and the two clutch — held by friction, firm enough to build a tower, loose enough to pull apart and start over. Everything else about the object is incidental. That grip is the brick.

It is also the thing that took the longest to find. The block of plastic glued together by hand and carried into a patent agent’s office in Copenhagen at 1:58 in the afternoon on January 28, 1958, looked like nothing much — a rectangle of eight studs over three little tubes, filed under the description “a toy building element.” Behind it lay a carpenter from Billund, twenty-six years, two fires, a bankruptcy, and a long detour through wood and failed plastic before the geometry came out right.

The man who made it, and the workshop he nearly lost

Ole Kirk Christiansen was born in 1891 on a poor farm in Filskov, in the flat heath country of western Jutland, one of thirteen children of a farm laborer. He went to work in the fields at six and to school two days a week. At fourteen he was apprenticed to an older brother as a carpenter, the trade that would define him. In 1916 he bought a small woodworking shop in Billund and set up making stepladders, ironing boards, stools, and furniture for the surrounding farms.

Then the Depression reached Denmark, and farmers stopped buying furniture. By 1932 Christiansen had laid off nearly all his staff and was close to bankruptcy. The same year, his wife Kirstine died, leaving him with four young sons. He had a workshop, a set of tools, a stock of birch, and no orders.

So he started making toys. They were small and used little wood, which mattered when money was short: pull-along animals, miniature cars and trucks, yo-yos. He was not the first carpenter to try this, and it was not an obvious way out. His own brothers, who had helped him with a loan, urged him to give it up as a frivolity. He kept going. In the worst stretches he sometimes traded toys to local families for food.

What the object inherited from wood

In 1934 he gave the venture a name. He took the Danish phrase leg godt — “play well” — and ran the two words together into LEGO. (It was years before anyone pointed out that in Latin the same letters mean “I put together,” a coincidence the company enjoys but did not plan.)

A wooden duck became one of his signature toys, made in many versions through the 1930s, its bill hinged so it opened as the duck was pulled along. The toys were not cheap to make. The birch was air-dried for two years, then kiln-dried for three weeks, then assembled, sanded, primed, and finished with three coats of varnish.

The three coats were not negotiable, as his son Godtfred learned. Sent to ship a batch of wooden ducks, the boy proudly told his father he had saved the company money by giving them only two coats. Christiansen made him fetch every duck back from the station, unpack them, and apply the third. The lesson hardened into the motto Godtfred later carved on a sign for the workshop wall: Det bedste er ikke for godt — “only the best is good enough.” That standard — tolerances honored to the last detail — would later be the difference between a brick that grips and one that doesn’t.

The workshop that taught it almost didn’t survive. In 1924 it and the family house had burned to the ground after two of his sons accidentally set fire to a pile of wood shavings. Christiansen rebuilt larger, taking the fire as a chance to build something better. That instinct was tested again on the night of March 20, 1942, when an electrical short started a fire that destroyed the factory along with its stock and its blueprints. This time he nearly walked away. He stayed, rebuilt, and kept his twenty-six employees on. By the mid-1940s the operation had an assembly line and was a real toy company, but still a small one, and still made of wood.

The brick before the grip

In 1947 Christiansen did something no other Danish toymaker had done: he bought a plastic injection-molding machine, imported from England, for more than twice the previous year’s profit. Wood was slow and labor-heavy; plastic could be molded by the thousand. It was a large bet for a company his size, and not everyone around him thought it wise.

Along with the machine came a sample that would shape everything after. The supplier sent over some Self-Locking Bricks made by a British inventor named Hilary Page, sold under his Kiddicraft brand — hollow plastic blocks with studs on top that let children stack and build. Christiansen and his son studied them.

In 1949 LEGO began producing its own version, called Automatic Binding Bricks — the English name a small tribute to the Allied forces who had liberated Denmark four years earlier. They were molded from cellulose acetate, came in red, white, yellow, and light green, and were, at first, not much of a hit. Danish shops were wary of plastic, which many parents regarded as cheap next to wood. More to the point, the bricks did not hold together well. They had studs on top and nothing underneath but hollow space, so a tall model was fragile and tended to collapse. Some retailers sent crates of them back. The company’s best-selling plastic toy in these years was not a brick at all but a model Ferguson tractor, launched in 1951.

The thing the courier would one day carry to Copenhagen already existed. It just didn’t yet do the one thing that mattered.

The system that demanded it hold

The turn came from a complaint. In 1954 Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, now helping run the firm, was at a toy fair in Britain when a buyer for a Copenhagen department store told him the trade had no coherence — every toy stood alone, nothing connected to anything else. “What an industry this is — no system of any kind whatsoever,” the buyer said, and the remark lodged.

Godtfred went home and audited LEGO’s entire catalog, more than two hundred items in wood and plastic, looking for one product that could anchor a whole connected world of play rather than a shelf of unrelated objects. He kept landing on the little plastic brick. In 1955 LEGO launched the LEGO System in Play, built around the brick and a Town Plan set: roads, buildings, vehicles, all to a common scale, all meant to grow piece by piece. A child did not buy a finished toy. A child bought into a system that never ended.

A system that grows piece by piece only works if the pieces stay put. There was still the problem that the bricks fell apart.

Three tubes

The fix was a piece of geometry, and it lived in the empty space under the brick. Put hollow tubes on the underside, positioned to sit between the studs of the brick below, and the two would clutch — held by friction, firm enough to build with, loose enough to pull apart and rebuild. Studs on top, tubes underneath. It made the bricks stable, and it did something larger: bricks of different sizes could now lock together in vast numbers of combinations. Six standard two-by-four bricks of the same color, the company would later calculate, can be joined in 915,103,765 different ways.

That is the design the courier delivered on January 28, 1958, at 1:58 in the afternoon. The studs-and-tubes brick patented that day is dimensionally identical to the one sold now. A brick molded in 1958 still locks onto one molded today.

Ole Kirk Christiansen did not see what it became. He died of a heart attack six weeks later, on March 11, 1958, at age sixty-six, having spent the last quarter century of his life turning a bankrupt carpentry shop into a toy company and never quite arriving at the thing that would make it famous. The brick that carried his factory out of Billund and into nearly every country on earth was patented while he was still alive, by the son he had once sent back to the train station to add a third coat of varnish.
