For ten years the verdict on the man in the ice was an accident. A herdsman or hunter, caught by weather high on an Alpine pass, who lay down and froze — a sad, ordinary end, five thousand years stale. The evidence seemed to point one way, and everyone read it the same way, until a radiologist in Bolzano noticed a small dense triangle the body had been hiding the whole time. It would turn out to be the oldest murder anyone has ever solved.
The case for an accident
The story began with two hikers who left the marked trail to save time. Erika and Helmut Simon were crossing the Ötztal Alps on 19 September 1991, on the high ridge where Austria meets Italy, and they cut across a glacier gully. At about 3,210 metres, near a saddle called the Tisenjoch below the Finail peak, they saw something brown half-submerged in the meltwater: the back of a head, two shoulders, a torso, the rest still locked in ice.
They assumed it was a mountaineer. People die on these ridges, and the ice gives them back years or decades later, leathery and intact. The Simons photographed the body, marked the spot, and reported it at the Similaun refuge below. The dead man, everyone assumed, was a recent enough problem for the police.
What followed was a small disaster. Because the corpse was taken for an ordinary accident victim, it was handled like one. Over the next several days, recovery crews worked the body loose with a jackhammer and ice axes, gouging the frozen hip and tearing the clothing. Bad weather drove them off twice. Curious onlookers and journalists tramped through the site. At one point someone tried to pry the figure out with a ski pole. The left hip was damaged, an arm wrenched, gear scattered across the ice. Only on 23 September was the body finally freed and flown down to Vent, then on to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Innsbruck.
Two things saved the find from being lost entirely. First, the mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who happened to be in the area, took one look at the leather clothing and the strange birch-bark containers and guessed the body was very, very old — centuries, maybe more. Then, on 24 September, the archaeologist Konrad Spindler examined the equipment and put a number on it: at least four thousand years.
He had undershot. Radiocarbon dating placed the man at roughly 3300 BCE — about 5,300 years dead. He was older than Stonehenge, older than the Great Pyramid, Europe’s oldest known natural mummy, recovered with his skin, organs, and last meal still inside him.
There was one more complication. A survey on 2 October found that the body had lain 92.56 metres on the Italian side of the border. Austria had pulled a corpse out of the ice that belonged to Italy. The man the world would come to call Ötzi went, eventually, to a refrigerated chamber in Bolzano, in the South Tyrol, where he is kept to this day at minus six degrees.
The evidence everyone misread
What made Ötzi extraordinary was not just his age but his completeness. He had not been buried or prepared. He had simply stopped, and the mountain had kept everything — which is exactly why the accident reading held so long. The body looked like a man who had wound down in the cold.
He was about 45 when he died, around 1.6 metres tall, perhaps 50 kilograms in life. His body carried 61 tattoos — short groups of black lines inked into the skin with soot, clustered at his knees, ankles, wrist, and lower back, almost exactly where his joints showed the wear of a hard life on steep ground. They look less like decoration than like marks over the places that hurt.
He was equipped for the high country, like a man who belonged there. He carried a copper axe with a head of nearly pure metal, hafted to a yew handle — a serious tool, and a status object, in an age when most edges were still stone. He had a yew longbow, not yet finished, and a quiver of fourteen arrows of which only two were ready to shoot. He had a flint dagger, a fire kit of pyrite and tinder fungus, and embers carried wrapped in maple leaves inside a birch-bark container. He wore a coat of stitched goat and sheep hide, leggings, a bearskin cap, and shoes with a deerskin upper and a bearskin sole, insulated inside with a bark-fibre net packed with grass, along with a woven grass mat — once described as a cloak, now thought more likely to have been rain cover or part of his backpack.
Inside him was a final meal: ibex and red deer with einkorn wheat, eaten sometime in the two hours before he died. Pollen in his gut — fresh grains of hop hornbeam, a tree that flowers in the valleys in spring — placed his death in late spring or early summer, and traced his last days as a climb up out of the green valley into the snow.
A man at home in the mountains, with a full kit and a recent meal, dead high on a pass. Read forward, it tells a clean story of weather and bad luck. For ten years that was the story, and nobody had reason to doubt it.
The arrowhead overturns the verdict
In 2001, a radiologist in Bolzano named Paul Gostner was reviewing X-ray and CT images of the body when he noticed something nobody had flagged in a decade of study: a dense, triangular shape buried in the flesh of the left shoulder. It was a flint arrowhead, driven in from behind and below, deep under the shoulder blade.
The wooden shaft was gone. Someone, it seemed, had pulled the arrow out and left the stone point inside.
Later, higher-resolution scanning traced exactly what the arrow had done. It had torn a gash in the left subclavian artery, one of the major vessels carrying blood from the heart toward the arm. For years the assumption was that a wound like that does not wait — that he lost consciousness within minutes and bled out where he fell. A 2025 forensic reconstruction complicates that: the internal bleeding it measured, around 110 milliliters pooled at the wound, was not enough on its own to kill him quickly, though blood loss through the open wound track cannot be ruled out. He may have died within minutes, or he may have lived for hours before the cold or the blood loss finished what the arrow started. What is not in question is that the man who had been quietly mourned as an accident victim had been shot in the back.
Once the forensic eye was on him, the rest of the body began to talk. There was a deep, unhealed cut across the base of his right thumb, down to the bone — the kind of wound a hand takes gripping a blade in a fight, made a day or two before he died. There were bruises. There was a blow to the head. And by one researcher’s disputed analysis, the blood was not all his: DNA testing was reported to have turned up traces of at least four other people on his gear — two on a single arrow, one on his knife, one on his coat, though that finding was never published in a peer-reviewed journal and other scientists have questioned it. Every line of the old verdict had been the same evidence, read without a killer in mind.
The verdict that stands
From those fragments, a sequence emerges, though no one can prove it. In his last days Ötzi was in some kind of trouble. He had fought, badly enough to slash his own hand to the bone. The blood of two different people on one arrow suggests he had shot at least two men and pulled his arrows back out of them to use again. Then he climbed high into the pass — and, whatever chase had put him there, he seems to have believed it was over. He stopped, settled in a sheltered spot, and ate a full meal.
He never got up from it. A single shot from below and behind, into the shoulder, and the artery opened, probably before he even saw who had followed him up. Whoever fired it climbed up to the dying man, and rather than take the valuable copper axe lying beside him — the obvious prize for a thief — they pulled the arrow shaft out of the wound. The likeliest reason to do that is that the shaft could be traced. It could say who had made it, and who had fired it.
So the killer left a fortune in copper on the ice and took away the one thing that pointed back at them. It very nearly worked. The arrowhead stayed buried in Ötzi’s shoulder for 5,300 years, and then for ten more in a museum, before anyone thought to look — the oldest known murder, solved by an X-ray, with the weapon still in the body and the motive still hanging in the snow.
