The Extinct Wolf That Became Every Dog on Earth
A dog lies in a grave in the Rhine valley, near what is now Bonn, beside two adult humans — an older man and a young woman — with grave goods. It died at around twenty-eight weeks old, not yet seven months. Dated to roughly 14,200 years ago, it is the oldest securely dated grave in which a dog and people were laid down together.
What makes it remarkable is what the bones record before the burial. At about nineteen weeks old, not quite five months, the puppy got very sick, and stayed sick on and off until it was twenty-three weeks. The infection was almost certainly canine distemper, a viral disease that still kills about four out of five puppies it touches, and that in the Paleolithic, with no medicine of any kind, should have been a death sentence. The illness left permanent marks in the teeth and bones — pitted enamel, gum disease, arthritis-like spurs on both elbows.
The puppy did not die of it. Surviving distemper at that age was close to impossible without help, and the help is the point: someone kept it warm, brought it food and water it could no longer fetch for itself, and cleaned up after it through weeks of fever. When it finally died, it was not discarded. It was laid in the grave with the two people.
The Bonn–Oberkassel dog is the clearest single proof that by the end of the last ice age the relationship was already old — old enough that a working animal of marginal use could be nursed through a fatal illness and then mourned. That is the endpoint. The harder question is everything behind it: where this animal’s line began, and from what. Trace it back, and the trail runs into a population of wolves that no longer exists.
The parent that isn’t there
Start with the obvious candidate and rule it out. For most of the twentieth century the assumption was simple: dogs are tamed grey wolves, the grey wolf is still out there, so the ancestor is standing in front of us. Genetics broke that picture.
When researchers compared the genomes of modern dogs with modern wolves, the dogs did not nest neatly inside any living wolf population. Dogs and today’s grey wolves came out as sister lineages — two branches that split from a common source and then went their separate ways. The source itself, the wolf population that actually gave rise to dogs, is gone. A landmark 2014 analysis put it plainly: dogs descend from an extinct type of wolf. The wolves alive now are the dog’s nearest living relatives, cousins rather than parents, and much of what looks like shared ancestry between them is later interbreeding, gene flowing back and forth long after the split.
The split was deep. Estimates from ancient and modern DNA place the divergence of the dog lineage from other wolves somewhere between about 27,000 and 40,000 years ago — before or during the coldest stretch of the last ice age, and tens of thousands of years before anyone planted a seed or penned a goat. The dog is the first domestic animal, by a wide margin. It was domesticated by hunter-gatherers, not farmers, in a world with no agriculture to feed it.
Seventy-two wolves, and none of them the one
If the living wolf is a cousin, the obvious next move is to dig up the dead one. The most detailed attempt came in 2022, when a team at the Francis Crick Institute in London, led by Anders Bergström and Pontus Skoglund, sequenced 72 ancient wolf genomes spanning the last 100,000 years — animals recovered from sites across Europe, Siberia, and North America. It is a span of roughly thirty thousand wolf generations, read off one bone at a time.
Two things fell out of it. First, ice-age wolves were strikingly connected. Across the whole northern hemisphere, populations that today would be deeply distinct were nearly uniform genetically, gene flowing freely from Spain to the Bering Strait; the deep regional divisions we see in wolves now are a recent development. Second, and stranger: none of the 72 wolves was the ancestor. Not one ancient genome sat at the root of the dog family tree. The progenitor population was real, and it left descendants in every dog alive — but it has not yet been found in the ground.
The same study turned up a complication in the dogs themselves. They carry not one ancestry but two. Most dogs — in Siberia, East Asia, and the Americas — descend mainly from wolves of eastern Eurasia. But dogs from the Near East and Africa carry a large additional component, as much as half their ancestry, from a second source related to wolves of the southwest. That raised the possibility that dogs had been domesticated twice, in two places, from two different wolf populations.
The answer has since tipped the other way. In March 2026 the same laboratory, working with 216 ancient canid remains, and a second team publishing alongside it, pushed the genetic record of dogs back by roughly five thousand years — to a 14,200-year-old animal from the Kesslerloch cave in Switzerland, and to pups from Pınarbaşı in Turkey some 15,800 years old, the earliest dogs anyone has yet identified by their DNA. Every early European dog in the sample traced back to the eastern source, with only small amounts of the western one. European wolves had contributed nothing detectable. Dogs were not domesticated a second time in the west; they arrived there already domesticated, and picked up the western component along the way. One origin, then — and one that still cannot be placed on a map.
The cold that pushed them together
The ancestor is a ghost, but the setting it lived in is coming into focus. One leading idea, set out in a 2021 paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences by Angela Perri, David Meltzer, Greger Larson and colleagues, points to Siberia at the height of the last ice age.
The Last Glacial Maximum, around 23,000 years ago, was brutal. Ice sheets locked up the north, and the people and animals that survived were pushed together into the few places still habitable, riding out the cold in the same shrinking patches of land. Humans and wolves, both hunting the same big game across the same frozen ground, were forced into close and lasting contact. Out of that pressure cooker, the argument runs, came the first dogs — and when people later walked east into the Americas across the Bering land bridge some 15,000 years ago, the dogs came with them. The genetic histories of the earliest American dogs and the earliest Americans track each other closely, two species making the same journey.
It is one hypothesis among several; central Asia and East Asia have both been proposed, and no ancient genome has yet pinned the place down. But the east is where the evidence points, and Siberia at the glacial maximum fits the timing and the genetics better than most.
The wolves that came to us
Whatever the place, the mechanism was probably not a human deciding to tame a wolf. Adult wolves do not domesticate well, and taming would have meant taking a top predator’s litter and feeding it through lean winters. Some researchers think people did exactly that — hunter-gatherers on record capture wild canid pups, hand-rear them, and sometimes nurse them — and argue that only pups raised inside a human group from the first weeks would have been safe to keep. It is a real minority case, and it has not been ruled out.
The more widely held story is that the wolves came to us. Where humans lived, they left waste — bones, offal, scraps around the edges of a camp. To a wolf, that was a reliable meal worth the risk of proximity. The wolves bold enough to scavenge near people, but calm enough not to attack or flee, did better than the rest. They ate more, bred more, and passed on their tolerance. Over generations the population at the edge of the firelight grew tamer, not because anyone bred it, but because the campsite itself selected for the wolves that could stand to be there. The friendliest wolves, in effect, domesticated themselves, and only later did people start to shape what was already changing.
That slow process has no single moment, no first dog. It is a population drifting, over thousands of years, from wild animal toward companion — losing the flight response, softening in the face and skull, learning to read human gestures the way no wolf pup does without being taught. Put untrained dog puppies in front of a person pointing at a hidden treat and more than half follow the finger to the right bowl. Wolf puppies hand-fed from birth and raised in their keepers’ beds do no better than chance.
This is where the trail bottoms out, and where it turns back toward the grave. By the time the puppy in the Rhine valley fell ill, that drift was finished enough that its keepers did not weigh its usefulness against the trouble of saving it. They simply saved it, and when it died they buried it with their own. The wolves it came from had been extinct for thousands of years by then, and would never be found. But the line had not ended. It had only changed shape — and it runs, unbroken, to every dog now asleep on a floor somewhere, descended from one vanished pack that learned to live beside us.
